Balinese, Swedish, Thai or Deep Tissue? Choosing Your Massage

Balinese, Swedish, Thai or deep tissue massage: what each style feels like and how to choose the right one for your body and your day.

Look at a spa menu and the names can blur together: Balinese, Swedish, Thai, deep tissue, aromatherapy. They are different experiences, and choosing well is the difference between a massage you enjoy and one you merely get through. Here is a plain-language guide to the main styles offered at Aline's Beauty Care & Spa, and how to pick between them.

Swedish massage: the gentle classic

Swedish massage uses flowing movements and adjustable pressure to provide a gentle, relaxing full-body experience. If you have never had a massage before, or you simply want to switch off, it is a sensible first choice. You can ask for lighter or firmer pressure as it goes.

Balinese massage: flowing and rejuvenating

Balinese massage combines flowing movements, pressure and traditional massage techniques for a relaxing and rejuvenating full-body experience. It tends to suit people who like the flow of a Swedish massage but want something with more depth and character.

Deep tissue massage: firmer and focused

Deep tissue massage uses firmer, focused pressure than a traditional relaxation massage. It is the one to ask about when you have specific tension, for example in the shoulders or back after long hours at a desk or on the road. Your therapist will discuss your preferred pressure and the areas that need attention before starting. Firmer does not mean you should grit your teeth; speak up if the pressure is too much.

Thai traditional therapy: assisted stretching

Thai Traditional Therapy combines assisted stretching and pressure-based techniques inspired by traditional Thai massage practices, for an energising as well as relaxing experience. If you prefer to feel stretched out and moved around rather than gently soothed, this is worth trying.

Aromatherapy: a sensory layer

Aroma Therapy Massage pairs relaxing massage techniques with aromatic oils for a calming experience for body and mind. It is a good option if the atmosphere matters as much as the technique.

Shorter and more targeted options

If you do not want a full-body session, Aline's also offers a Back Massage, a Head Massage and Thai Foot Reflexology. A Back Massage is designed as a shorter, focused session. A Head Massage uses gentle techniques around the scalp. Thai Foot Reflexology focuses on the feet and is particularly welcome after a day of walking or standing.

How to choose in three questions

First, how do you want to feel afterwards: soothed, stretched or worked on? Soothed points to Swedish, Balinese or aromatherapy, stretched to Thai, and worked on to deep tissue. Second, how much time do you have? Shorter, targeted treatments suit a tight schedule, while full-body sessions suit a slower day. Third, are there areas to avoid or protect? Tell your therapist before you begin, and mention any injuries or health conditions. If you are unsure whether a massage is right for you, check with your doctor first.

Before and after your massage

Eat lightly beforehand and arrive a few minutes early so you are not rushed. Drink water afterwards and give yourself some quiet time rather than moving straight to a busy schedule. Pressure and approach are always something to talk about, so use the conversation at the start.

Common questions people ask

Is a firmer massage always better? Not at all. Pressure that is too strong makes the body tense up instead of letting go, so aim for a level that feels effective but comfortable. Can I change my mind mid-session? Yes. Ask your therapist to adjust the pressure or focus, since that is exactly what the conversation at the start is for. Should I book the longest option? Not necessarily. A shorter treatment that you can fully relax into is better than a long one squeezed between commitments.

It also helps to be honest about what you want. Some people want a massage for tension, others for a rest, and others as a treat. All of these are good reasons, and each points to a slightly different style.
